How to Install a Claude Plugin, Step by Step

Figuring out how to install a Claude plugin takes about two minutes, and none of those minutes involve code. You open your settings, you upload a file, you accept one warning, and Claude shows up in your next conversation with skills it did not have before. Below is the exact path, the exact buttons, how to confirm it worked, and what to do when the upload refuses to go through.

What you are actually adding

Quick vocabulary, because the words get used interchangeably and it makes the settings screen confusing. A skill is one written method: how to build a cold email sequence, how to structure a sales page, how to storyboard a video. A plugin is the package you upload, and it can hold one skill or twenty. A Cartridge is what we call a plugin built around a single job, guide included.

The practical consequence is that when you add a plugin to Claude, you are not installing software and you are not switching to a different model. You are handing Claude a set of instructions it will pull up on its own when the conversation calls for them. Nothing changes about how you type. Everything changes about what comes back.

What you need before you start

Two things. Not three.

• A paid Claude subscription. Pro is enough. Plugin upload does not exist on the free plan, and this is the single real prerequisite. If the option is missing from your settings, this is almost always why.
• The plugin file. Usually a skill or a pack of skills. If it arrived as a zip, unzip it first and keep the folder that comes out. That folder is what you load into Claude.

Nothing to install on your machine, no developer account, no terminal, no API key. If you can attach a file to an email, you can do this.

How to install a Claude plugin, step by step

1. Open Claude on a computer. You can manage plugins elsewhere later, but the first upload is far easier on desktop.
2. Open Settings. It sits near your account name, at the bottom of the sidebar or behind your initials.
3. Go to the Plugins section. Some versions label it Capabilities. It is not the Skills tab, even though the two look similar.
4. Click Add, then Upload plugin.
5. Select the plugin folder or file on your computer.
6. Read and accept the warning about third-party plugins. Claude will not continue until you do.
7. The plugin lands in your list, switched on, with its skills visible underneath.

That is the whole thing. You configured nothing, you tuned nothing. Claude just learned a set of skills that are available from your next conversation onward.

The warning you have to accept

Before the plugin loads, Claude shows a notice about installing content that did not come from Anthropic. The wording moves around between versions, but the point never changes: a plugin is a set of instructions written by someone else, it has not been reviewed for you, and it will act inside your conversations. You are the one vouching for it.

So apply the same rule you would to any file: only load a plugin from a source you would trust with a real document. If you got it from a vendor you know, a colleague, or a shop you bought it from, accept and move on. If it came from a random link, do not.

How to check the plugin actually loaded

Do not take the confirmation message as proof. Take thirty seconds and verify it properly:

• Look at the plugin in your settings list. It should be there, toggled on, with its individual skills listed under it. Those skill names matter, because you can call them out loud.
• Open a new conversation. Threads you started before the install keep their old setup, so testing in an old chat proves nothing.
• Ask for something the plugin is built to handle, and name the skill in your message the first time. Something like: use the sales page skill to write the offer section for my coaching program.

You can tell it fired by the shape of the answer. A loaded skill makes Claude follow a method: it asks you the questions the skill tells it to ask, works through the steps in order, and returns the structure the skill defines. If you get a friendly, generic paragraph instead, the skill did not kick in and it is time to check the list again.

When the Claude plugin upload fails

Four causes cover almost every failed install. Run through them in this order.

• You are in the wrong tab. The most common one by a mile. Skills and Plugins live next to each other in settings and do different jobs. Dropping a plugin into the skills tab gets you nothing useful and no clear error. Back out and find the Plugins section.
• The file is still zipped. You are trying to upload the zip itself instead of what is inside it. Double click the zip first, then select the folder it produces.
• You are on the free plan. There is no upload button to find, because the feature is not part of the free tier. Upgrading to Pro makes the section appear.
• It uploaded but does not show up. Reload Claude, reopen settings, and check the toggle. On a very new account, or after a burst of rapid actions, some features get held back for a while. Do not hammer the button. Wait, then try again.

Do not go install six plugins and admire the list. Pick one job you were going to do this week anyway: an outreach sequence, a landing page, a month of posts.
